Vienna is known to be on top of many international rankings. For the past three years, the Mercer Study repeatedly awarded the Austrian capital as the city with the highest quality of life in the world. During the ranking for „The Top 10 Smart Cities on the planet“ Vienna was consequently named the smartest city in the world. Being an innovative city with much potential, Vienna is also becoming more and more interesting for tourism and international business companies.

Climate strategist Boyd Cohen elects the ten „most smartest“ cities in the world on the webpage fastcoexist.com by including different variables like for example innovations and sustainability into his ranking. Cohen defines an „intelligent city“ thereby as a city that uses information and communication technologies to achieve a sustainable and more efficient use of resources. This results into lower costs and the reduction of energy use, increased services, a higher quality of life and a reduction of environment pollution. As such, an intellignt metropolis knows to use its resources efficiently and ecologically sensitive to increase not the quality of life among other factors.

Amongst the top 10 of the smartest cities are New York / USA and Toronto / Canada as well as Hong Kong / China and Kopenhagen / Denmark. But the ultimate winner is Vienna, which at first took Cohen by surprise. The reason is that the Austrian metropolis is the only city in the ranking that managed to rank top 10 in all categories: innovation city (5), regional green city (4), quality of life (1) and digital governance (8).

Vienna is pursuing its goals consistently, among others with the project „Smart City Vienna“ which was initiated by public services, companies and research institutions in Vienna. To keep its leading role ahead of other metropolises in the world, constant new integrative solutions and improved methods are being developed.
Experts in industry and business expect the Smart Cities to develop into a significant international market. Also real estate experts understand them as having great potential for companies and their workforces. Because of that, international enterprises have often chosen Vienna as their place of business or as a location for their branches. One indicator for this development is the increased number in guest-nights as many employees are looking for an adequate accommodation for the duration of a specific project.

„At the moment, we see a high demand for business apartments in Vienna. Its great international reputation certainly plays a part in that,“ agrees Moe Mahmoodian, executive manager at viennaresidence business rental apartments.
